In May 2024, Palmetto Futures, a forward-thinking nonprofit organization focused on delivering equity and uplifting overburdened communities, was awarded a grant within the EPA's Promoting Readiness and Enhancing Proficiency to Advance Reporting and Data (PREPARED) initiative. Palmetto Futures’ project, the PREPARED Gullah Geechee Corridor Program, is providing special assistance to a selected group of community-based organizations (CBOs) within the Gullah Geechee Corridor to build organizational capacity and prepare them for federal contracting, from applying to implementing and evaluating federally funded, environmental-focused projects.
Palmetto Futures and the PREPARED Project Team are excited to announce that the initial cohort for the PREPARED Gullah Geechee Corridor Program has been selected! Cohort member organizations span across the entire Gullah Geechee Corridor, from North Carolina to Florida, and wholeheartedly represent the passion and environmental stewardship of the Gullah and Geechee cultures.
Selected organizations include:
North Carolina Rice Festival, Inc.
Men and Women United for Youth and Families
HEARO, Inc.
United Communities Assistance Network (UCAN)
Town of Atlantic Beach, South Carolina
New Life Professional Development
The Original Gullah Festival of South Carolina, Inc.
Believing in the NuYu
Heritage Works, Inc.
Evolus, Inc.
Sage Futures
Black in Marine Science
Southern Province Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO)
The PREPARED Gullah Geechee Corridor Program was officially launched at the 6th Annual Gullah Geechee Environmental & Energy Conference hosted by project partner, the Gullah Geechee Chamber Foundation, where the team and cohort members met to discuss project ideas in more detail and review next steps for the new year. Palmetto Futures and the team are eager to begin comprehensive and in-depth courses in January to kickstart the program curriculum and begin enhancing federal grant proficiency, advancing reporting and data acquisition, and working towards building community resilience and long-term sustainability.
